Overview

A workshop for helping people to hear, process and discuss difficult information - to build resilient, adaptive communities

What is it?

This practical workshop is for anyone who has registered with the National Emergency Briefing to facilitate a screening of The People's Emergency Briefing (PEB) documentary. It focuses on the psychological tools and facilitation skills to help your audience engage with difficult material - and feel part of a growing, community-led response to the climate and nature emergency.

The information in the film may be new to some of those attending the screening and this workshop aims to create a psychologically safe space for that information to be processed and explored.

The workshop is optional; aimed to support you to support others by facilitating successful PEB film screening and discussion sessions. It complements two facilitator discussion guides from CPA which will be sent to you upon registering.

This workshop is being run by the Climate Psychology Alliance in partnership with the National Emergency Briefing.

Background

In November 2025, leading scientists, economists, and experts gathered in Westminster to present the evidence for the climate and nature emergency directly to MPs and decision-makers. That briefing is now being released as a 50-minute documentary The People's Emergency Briefing, available from April 7 for community screenings across the UK.

The aim is to bring the same evidence to community, faith, and business leaders, and to citizens everywhere - and to open honest conversations about what an emergency response could look like. Screenings will be hosted by volunteers like you.

What this session covers

  • The psychological context - how creating the right psychological conditions can help people to absorb difficult information
  • Six stress responses - how our nervous systems can respond to stressful situations and information
  • Seven Elements - a psychological, practical framework for planning and facilitating supportive, productive meetings with confidence and care
  • What if? - skills and techniques for handling difficult moments in groups
  • Post-event debriefing - reviewing and learning from the event, and the importance of restoring yourself.

The session will be interactive, with work in pairs and small groups to consider your own event, and space for questions and discussions throughout.
